First Makeup Tutorial FINALLY Up!

First makeup tutorial is up - scroll to the bottom of the page for the video

If you know me, you know that I’m obsessed with makeup. My old roommate in the US always said that if she lost me at target, she knew she could find me in the beauty aisle.

For many years now, I have done my friends and family members’ make up, and I sincerely enjoy it. I also really enjoy pampering my own face into something presentable. My friends have often asked me if I can teach them how to do their makeup…however when they come over it usually just ends up with me doing their makeup, and them not really gaining anything from it! Also, with my friends all being scattered in various countries, orchestrating a makeup lesson for them all is a bit of a challenge. So, I thought, I might as well make a YouTube video of a few different makeup looks.

I’ve been wanting to do makeup tutorials for a while now, but I didn’t want people to be confused about me doing makeup looks as well as my music. I thought about creating a completely different YouTube channel for The Lavender Row blog, so as not to post non-music content on my Amanda Rakel YouTube channel. I even put it up for a vote on my Instagram whether I should start a new channel or let the content coexist. The majority voted for a new channel, however, there were a couple of marketing geniuses I know, who voted co-exist. In the end, I decided to let the content coexist. I am first a musician, but there are many other sides to me and I don’t think I should supress those passions because I fear people will misunderstand my intentions. I also really want to do more YouTube videos brining people behind the scenes of my music. Some of the upcoming content will show how I created the different looks for my music projects, so you see, it all comes together nicely :-)

It was one hell of a journey creating this video. I kept on running into problems with gear, lighting, funny noises in the background (AKA my dog, Bubbles, farting), the camera dying on me without me realising. When I finally managed to finish the video (4 days of botched filming before that miracle happened) YouTube wouldn’t let me upload the video because it was more than 15 minutes long. I needed to verify my account first, which took seconds, but once I had done that, it took nearly 12 hours before it would let me upload the video. I guess it took a while for the system to register my verification. At long last, the video is up! I decided to do a really simple day look as it covers the basics and those techniques can be applied to all makeup, whether you’re going for a dressed up or dressed down look.

Here is a list of the products I used:

Lancôme Effacernes Longue Tenue Long Lasting Softening Concealer SPF 30

Horst Kirchberger Mattifying Powder Veil

NARS Falaises Sun Wash Diffusing Bronzer

NARS Deep Throat Blush

Urban Decay All Nighter Pollution Protection Setting Spray

BROWS Blink Brow Pencil *discontinued

Anastasia Beverley Hills Eyebrow Gel

NARS Falaises Sun Wash Diffusing Bronzer

LIPS Estee Lauder Double Wear Lip Pencil in Tulip 28

Fenty Beauty Fenty Glow Gloss Bomb

I also HIGHLY recommend that you invest in some makeup brushes if you haven’t already. It makes the application process much easier. Just like it’s easy to find cheap makeup that is good, you can also find affordable makeup brushes. When I lived in London, I remember seeing loads of affordable makeup brushes in Boots, so you don’t have to go to a major makeup brand to buy them. However, I do have some MAC makeup brushes that I have now had for over 10 years, so choosing to invest in some good makeup brushes can really pay off.

I recommend at least having 3 eyeshadow brushes, a contour brush, and a powder brush. My sister got me an amazing brush set from MORPHE a couple of years ago, and they sell many brush sets at an affordable price – they even have vegan sets. Here is a link to their website

Hope you enjoy the first tutorial!!
